As I have the blog from it’s lengthy slumber I should probably fill you in with what I have been up to in the meantime (and pretend to myself that you actually find this sort of thing interesting). In this post I’ll give you a
For this past year myself and my fellow Victorian Whore Dogs have been working really hard. We’ve written a bunch of new songs, we released a 3 track EP entitled “Fetch” and we’ve played many wonderful gigs and meet new fans and friends. This year we hope to do even more shows and hopefully record more horrible noise to share with the world.
Since I was last doing my blog my tabletop wargaming has dropped off a bit. I neither had the desire to paint or play (although I am slowly getting back into it, currently working on painting dwarf Bloodbowl team). In place of wargaming I have done a lot more pen and paper rpgs. Primarily it has been 13th Age with some Pathfinder and a smattering of other systems. It’s been excellent fun getting back into the pen and paper stuff and all the folks I’ve been playing with make it an even better experience.
One thing I’ve kept at this whole time is board-gaming, whether with my usual buddies from my home town or with my pals Mike, Jon and Tim at our regular meet-ups. I have played a lot of great games: Blood Bowl Team Manager, Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, Lords of Waterdeep, Zombiecide, Bioshock Infinite, Kingdom Builder, Super Dungeon Explore, etc. In time I’ll get round to talking about these in more depth.
Just over a year ago I joined Guildford Archery Club. I have had great fun there, all the members are really helpful and friendly and the facilities are top notch. I’m happy to say after a iffy start I am working to improve my technique and over the last month or so I consistently breaking my own personal bests and the various rounds and distances. I’ve even had a go at field archery which was excellent fun and something I’ll definitely being doing more once the weather has improved. (Weirdly, field archery doesn’t take place in a field but in a forest with targets dotted all over the place. It kind of works like a golf course. Take your shots, mark your score, head to the next target).
Historical European Martial Arts. I’ve only been doing this for a couple of weeks but I’m already really enjoying it. Currently we are learning how to fight with a back sword. I’m trying to get more exercise in general (I’ve also taken up swimming regularly again) and this has the added bonus of improving my overall balance, and hopefully my skills at LARP fighting. Plus you get to fight people with swords and that’s just cool.
Speaking of LARP, 2013 was a great time for getting back into it. I had started fight training with some friends in a local park, organised by Dave and it was the first year of Empire from Profound Decisions. I will definitely being doing more posts about this in the near future because I have a lot of tales to tell and hopefully I’ll be making more kit for my character.
Books and Comics
I get dropped off at work by Amy (my long suffering girlfriend) about 45mins early as she drives to the next town for her job. I also get picked up 45mins late. I’ve used this as an excuse to actually get some reading done as I don’t really make time for it otherwise. I’ve had books and comics that I’ve owned for quite a while, gathering dust and now I’m actually getting through them, and at a reasonable pace. I’m quite slow at reading but so far I’ve polished off a few autobiographies and quite a number of graphic novels. I might do a few reviews on what I’ve read so far.
So this is what I’ve been up to in a nutshell. I’m sure there’s I have forgotten that I’ll talk about at some point. This post has actually been quite helpful to me for figuring out what I’ll be writing about in due time. I hope it has been mildly interesting, dear reader.
Until next time, stay sharp, stay safe.
