As promised before, I shall be keeping you up to date with the terrain building project that I have just started with my friends. The idea is to spend the next few months regularly meeting up for an evening to build terrain for an up-coming campaign we intend to run. We are taking a lot of inspiration from video games like Borderlands, Rage and the Fallout series as well as movies like Book of Eli, the Mad Max trilogy and any other Post-Apoc title’s we can get our hands on.
So far it has just been me and my good friend Kris (a very talented modeller/sculptor/painter) building things, but I believe there will be others joining us through-out the project.
During this work in progress we shall keep a tally of just how many rivets we have added to each individual piece as well as a total rivet count to date for the whole project. There is no good reason for this, it’s just a bit of silliness. The rivet count will only be applied to pieces that are pretty much complete and ready for the painting stage.
What materials have we used so far?
- Foamex: A fantastic material that comes in sheets. It’s sturdy and cuts very easily.
- Corrugated Card.
- Drink Cans.
- Thin Cardboard.
- Wooden craft sticks.
- Textured plasticard.
- Plastic rod: Mainly chopped down and turned into rivets.
- Random GW bits.
- LOTS of superglue.

Pretty self-explanatory piece here. GW weapons used. Model used for scale. Creator: Kris. Rivets used: 40.
I really like the attention to detail, like the treadplate on the platforms, and the broken handrail. Creator: Kris.
This piece was heavily inspired by some terrain in Borderlands. I am planning to create a post in the future that compares Borderlands screenshots with pieces we have made. Creator: Kris.
This is my very own first attempt at terrain. Not as neat as the pieces Kris has made, but give me some time and I’ll be up to scratch. Really keen to get his painted and see the finished article. I do plan on cutting down the base or “footprint” a bit. Creator: Andy. Rivets used: 87.
Rail Track Section.
I wasn’t present when Kris made this bit, so when he showed me I was blown away. Very impressive indeed. The idea is to use muliple sections on this for use on mining outpost type battle boards. Creator: Kris. Rivets used: 63.
Happier with this piece than my first. Slowly improving. Creator: Andy.
For those of you not familiar with Necromunda, after you have created your gang and bought all of your equipment, you make some dice rolls to see what kind of territories you currently control. We have decided that it would be nice to have some centre pieces for when you happen to be fighting in these areas. The Chem Pit is one of these centre pieces. I think it will be very impressive when it is finished, complete with luminous, bubbling goo! Creator: Kris.
Another piece lifted straight from Borderlands. The last 3 photos don’t show it up that well, but the shack has been undercoated/primed with brown spray paint. Creator: Kris. Rivets used: 69.
Two Storey Ruined Building.
Still needs a lot of work. Again, I’m eager to get this painted. It’s going to require a LOT of rivets for this one. Creator: Andy.
So that’s it for this installment. Keep your eyes peeled for more. Next time we might even have a piece fully painted!
